Potato modified for resistance to Phytophthora infestans| BASF Plant Science GmbH | Resistance to diseases and pests (Phytophthora infestans resistance), Resistance to herbicides (Sulfonylurea)
- IM 11-005 Regulatory decision [ English ]
The genes introduced by the modification, Rpi-blb1 and Rpi-blb2 rendering the LMO more resistant against P. infestans and ahas rendering the plant tolerant imidazolinone herbicides, may result in enhanced selective advantage of the LMO in the environment, which could result in enhanced weediness and invasiveness of the LMO. Effects on non-target organisms and soil micro-organisms have also been taken into consideration, but are expected to be negligible.
EN
The Rpi-blb genes will cause resistance specifically against P. infestans, not to other plant diseases. Development of enhanced weediness or invasiveness is generally dependent on a number of new traits, not just one trait. It is therefore not likely that the LMO will turn weedy or invasive due to the presence of the Rpi-blb genes. The herbicide tolerance caused by the ahas gene cannor lead to enhanced selective advantage because the environmental use of imidazolinone herbicides is not allowed in the Netherlands, and the use of these herbicides in greenhouses wil not lead to a selective advantage in the environment.
EN
The likelyhood that the application of the LMO as foreseen by the applkicant will lead to adverse environmental effects is negligible. Should any adverse effects still occur, these effects will be limited to the site of the filed experiment, because of the management strategies proposed by the applicant, that are mandatory.
EN
The overall risk is negligible.
EN
The risks of the small scale field experiment as proposed by the applicant:
- the number of locations is restricted to 1 each year, with a maximum surface area of 1 ha;
- there will be an isolation distance of 10 meters between the cultivated LMOs and other potatoes that are not part of the experiment
- in the year after the cultivation of the LMO there will be no cultivation of potatoes on the field plot of the experiment and volunteer potato plants observed on the plot will be destroyed.
